About Us

Kim Gobbi is the founder and publisher of Newburyport-Today.com.  She has lived in Newburyport for 9 years and believes it’s shame she has hasn’t been here longer.  Kim has always been drawn to creative outlets, a trained Chef; she put away her knives after the birth of her third son.  She founded Newburyport Today in the Spring of 2009 to shine a spotlight on her fabulous adopted community.  When she’s not glued to her computer she enjoys cooking for friends and family as well as spending time with her 1st husband, David.   It is important to note that her three boys find her to be the most embarrassing individual alive.

Kathleen Downey is a freelance writer who is thrilled to be writing about interesting people and topics in the Newburyport community and no longer writing about circuit packs (as she did in her previous incarnation as a technical writer for a telecommunications company). She loves animals and is passionate about protecting them from harm. Kathleen is a longtime volunteer for the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society (www.mrfrs.org); for many years, she wrote that organization’s newsletter. Kathleen received a Master’s Certificate in Animal Policy and Advocacy in 2011 from Humane Society University, the academic branch of The Humane Society of the United States. She is a graduate of Merrimack College. Kathleen lives in Byfield with her two dogs, four cats, and a special human named Christopher.

Christin Walth has lived in Newburyport for nearly 10 years and enjoys living downtown with her grumpy old dog Ichi.  As a Nebraska native and long time resident of Sweden, she finds our winters tolerable and our summers still too short.  She is a professor, writer, dog walker, bike rider and passionate environmentalist.  As a proud member of the Newburyport Today staff, she maintains our calendar of all the events around town – and tries to attend all of them, too!

Neal Ernstrom has been a television news videographer for the past 10 years in New Hampshire and now in Boston for WHDH-TV Channel 7. In the past few years his passion for still photography has grown and he has been fortunate enough to shoot Weddings, Family Portraits, and Media for Websites. If you need Video or Still pictures for any occasion please feel free to send Neal an email.

Muggsy Barnacle, our Random Notes columnist, may or may not be a real person. But his column arrives on time with no police on its trail. He has owned and published several newspapers  such as the original The Current, The PaperThe Yankee Flyer and, The Back Bay Extra (Boston).  Muggsy has written for The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, Rolling Stone, The Boston Phoenix, and The Boston Review of the Arts and scores of other publications in three countries.
Today, he immensely enjoys doing restaurant reviews/updates and writing a local frenzied report on the skinny on what is supposedly going on in Newburyport.  Plus, he is incredibly in love with his Fair Port.

Tom Salemi doesn’t like cats, particularly his own. He does enjoy riffing about local politics and telling everyone else how things ought to be. He went to Boston University for its journalism program and proximity to Fenway Park. A former Daily News reporter, he now pretends to write for the CIA and other clandestine organizations, real and/or imagined.

Jill Oestreicher Gross loves living in Newburyport, the smallest city she’s ever lived in. The New York native didn’t realize when she signed up for motherhood that the job included planning extensive birthday parties twice a year or blowing other people’s noses. But she loves it all, and especially her husband and their two children. Jill earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University and is a fourth generation journalist.

Alyson Aiello says the greatest side effect of being a writer is that she’s required to experience every moment of life with all five senses fully engaged. That said, she admits she could have done without sense of smell a few times since becoming a parent. But, the Cincinnati native and Ohio University journalism grad loves writing, loves parenting and is excited to bring the two together via Newburyport Today’s Whiny Wednesday column.
