It’s that glorious time of year here in the North East when gardens are full of luscious tomatoes. It took me years to explain to my kids that the ones that come from gardens are not even remotely the same fruit as the orangey-pink globes found in the supermarket. Amazingly, this year they finally get it. We wander the farmers market together in search of heirlooms and tiny cherry tomatoes of every color to pop into our mouths like candy during the walk home.

This week I wanted to show the people in the New You healthy lifestyle groups how they could make healthy meals really quickly, even on a busy night, and love the results.

This was one of those weeks were the Newburyport Farmer’s Market delivered big. It was a misty Sunday and the kids and I headed out to shop. After we lugged way too many bags home (I really only went to get one or two things) we then spent the rest of the day snacking and cooking!

Despite the blistering winds, the sun was shining yesterday and we headed out as a family to the Newburyport Farmer’s Market. It was our first trip to the market this season and it did not disappoint! This year the market has added Community Supported Fisheries to their line up of fantastic vendors.

I’m happy heading down to the local bakery to buy a loaf when needed. But last week I took a pizza making class, and one of the take-home items was some sourdough starter. After spending considerable time online reading about how to care for the starter, I happened upon some recipes for a San Francisco “style” sourdough loaf. I can’t make authentic San Francisco sourdough, the organisms living in my sourdough starter are native to Newburyport.

It’s been a little while since we checked in with a local recipe. We are not sure if it’s the winter doldrums of stew and crock pot meals, but it’s been hard to get inspired to tuck into anything besides soup and bowls of chili. That all changed on Friday when we stopped in to David’s Fish Market and found jumbo shrimp on sale and calling us from the fish case were containers of local jonah crab meat.

Stopping by the Newburyport Farmer’s Market on Sunday we spied the most beautiful baby bokchoy. A good friend is Taiwanese and she makes something called “Lionshead” meatballs with these young green stalks and we’ve always loved the dish.

With the CFA Fish delivery of Hake on Friday and the opening of the Fall Farmer’s Market on Sunday, we had a fridge full of great fresh food. So after a busy weekend of running around to Football games and such, we settled in to a family dinner on Sunday evening of some great local food.

The process of roasting a whole fish reminds me of the one for deep frying turkeys–both resemble spectator sports and their cooking times correlate with how long it takes to finish a certain number of drinks.

I’m having more fun with local Striped Bass! This recipe is unusual, awesome, and ideal for Striper since it’s skin should be removed to cut out the too-strong-tasting fat line that lurks under there – causing a problem for some who want to grill it.

This improv came out really good last night. I was kind of surprised the favas I got at Tendercrop Farm came out of the pods so small – like baby peas – but it meant I didn’t have to cooked them ahead. I got the corn at Tendercrop too, the scallops at David’s, the pancetta at Joppa.

For this installment of What’s for Dinner we headed back to Tendercrop Farm and found these lovely greens. Now don’t be scared out there, greens are very very good, they are crunchy and flavorful and when combined with bacon, caramelized shallots, and pasta, well, who’s not going to like that?!!??
