On a Wednesday in 2006, Lisa Manley was preparing to move with her husband and young son to Basel, Switzerland. She was a medical recruiter and was headed for a new job at the Novartis world headquarters.
“The house was packed, and we were moving in one week,” the Newburyport native said. She knew she had not been feeling well, but wrote it off to the stress of the move. But that day, her life changed when the doctor told her she had stage three, advanced colon-rectal cancer.

It’s a constant harangue of “nothing to do, nothing to do” if you have a teenager you’ve heard it. We’ve been hearing it for a long time in Newburyport, “there just isn’t enough for the kids to do in this city”. The lack of activities for youth has been blamed for all sorts of mischief and even petty crimes, but that is all changing, as the city seems to now be over flowing with activities for kids to take advantage of.

It’s Friday evening, July 31, 2009, and I’ve taken a break from pedicabbing to experience the opening ceremony in Sturbridge, Massachusetts of the 30th Annual Pan-Mass Challenge – the charity that Newburyport Pedicab was founded to support. The Pan-Mass Challenge, the grand-daddy of sports philanthropy events. The Challenge has grown from a collegial ride of a few dozen close friends to an annual bike-a-thon of 5000 riders and 3000 volunteers.

We found local resident Orren Fox through Twitter and were immediately impressed. Orren is a 12 year old boy with a clear passion for animals of all kinds, chickens in particular. He chronicles his love through his blog, Happy Chickens Lay Healthy Eggs and provides a wealth of information about breeds, habitat, and temperament.
