Wow – what a week we had last week. So many people came to our little neck of the woods to experience Newburyport, our beautiful downtown and river and yes, Yankee Homecoming. The weather also cooperated as well. We were blessed. We are also happy to report that Newburyport has been in the news as well. I just finished reading the August edition of Boston Magazines “Best of Boston 2010” issue and Newburyport was front and center in the Best of Suburbs section. Also, the Concord NH Monitor newspaper ran a recent story on Newburyport as well.

Happy Yankee Homecoming week and hello from the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce and Industry! Newburyport is alive with so much activity, music, friends, family, shopping, dining and summer fun!
The Chamber and our members are certainly in the swing of things. Today kicks off our annual tradition of “Old Fashioned Sidewalk Sales” starting today and continuing through Saturday, July 31st! Enjoy old fashioned, outdoor shopping throughout downtown Newburyport, Port Plaza and the Tannery from 10 AM to 7 PM. In combination with Yankee Homecoming, Old Fashioned Sidewalk Sales entice locals and visitors alike, creating an enthusiasm for downtown activities that lasts well after the sales end!

I recently saw a sign in someone’s office that read “I love it here!” When I saw it I immediately thought of my adopted home and place of business and quickly said to myself what a great tag line! In full disclosure and with kudos to our neighbors to the north I must say that the tag line was for a State of New Hampshire tourism promotion. Well, I do love it here and I know that many of you do as well. What I love is that there is so much to do in our little neck of the woods; take a stroll in Maudslay State Park, take a lesson from Plum Island Kayak, pet one of the animals over at Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm, look for sea glass at the Salisbury State Reservation, roam around our many, quaint and welcoming shops, dine in one of our fabulous restaurants…not sure what to do? Stop by our office downtown and inquire or check out our web site as well. Here is a sampling of this week’s treats!

“June is bustin’ out all over” – from the quintessential American composing team of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s – “Carousel.” I have a special place in my heart for “Carousel” and for June as well. The first musical I ever performed in was indeed Carousel and I was just 13 years old….it seems like yesterday! I hope you are enjoying this beautiful stretch of weather we are having, let’s hope it continues!

They are on a whirl wind tour of the East Coast and said that Newburyport was one of their most favorite gems so far on their journey! They are absolutely right of course – Newburyport and our greater region is indeed a gem!
