Crabgrass Puppets Climb the Beanstalk at the Firehouse Center
Award-winning puppeteers present Jack and the Beanstalk.

“Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman.” We all remember those words uttered by the giant who resides way, way up on top the beanstalk that has grown outside Jack’s window in the favorite tale of Jack and the Beanstalk.

If you’ve forgotten the ending or want to introduce your own children to this classic story come to the Firehouse on Sunday, January 22 at 3pm to see the award-wining Crabgrass Puppets perform their version of Jack and the Beanstalk onstage at the Arakelian Theater at the Firehouse Center for the Arts, (Market Square) in Newburyport. Tickets are $11 for Adults, $9 for Members, Students and Seniors; and are on sale now at the Box Office (Wed-Sun, 12N-5P), by calling 978/462-7336 or online at www.firehouse.org

Crabgrass Puppets are a favorite at the Firehouse:  last year’s performance of Haiku, Hiphop and Hotdogs filled the Arakelian Theater with happy patrons. Delighting audiences for three decades the nationally touring troupe and their magnificent puppets are always a favorite with children and parents alike!

Jamie Keithline and Bonny Hall formed Crabgrass Puppet Theatre in San Francisco in 1982 and have delighted audiences across the nation with their whimsical humor and puppetry. Now residents of Halifax, Vermont, they continue to tour throughout the U.S., performing in schools, museums and theaters. Venues have included the Detroit Institute of Art, the Smithsonian, Paper Mill Playhouse, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and dozens of regional and national puppetry festivals. In 2001 Jamie and Bonny were honored by their peers when their production Anansi, Spiderman of Africa! was awarded an UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence, the highest honor in American puppetry. This honor was repeated in 2005 with the receipt of a second UNI award for The Bremen Town Musicians. In 2008, Bonny received a Commendation for Design in the Puppet Theatre by the Arlyn Award Foundation for The Day It Snowed Tortillas.

This performance is approx. 50-60 minutes in duration and just might be the perfect antidote for an otherwise dreary January afternoon.  Say it’s for the kids but know that it will be a treat for all the adults as well.
