Newburyport Receives $1.98M for Waterfront Bulkhead Restoration and Welcomes Lt. Governor Murray for the presentation.

Newburyport's State Representative Michael Costello prepares to formally present the state grant to restore Newburyport's waterfront bulkhead.

Louis Elisa, the Executive Secretary for the Seaport Advisory Council discusses a point with Geordie Vining (left) Senior Project Manager in the City of Newburyport’s Office of Planning and Development.

epresentative Costello welcomes the crowd of well over 100 people to the waterfront deck of the Black Cow as Geordie Vining, Louis Elisa, Mayor Donna Holiday and Lt. Governor Tim Murray look on.
Representative Costello begins by telling the crowd that it is a great day. Despite this restoration being a project that won’t be visible to visitors and residents, it will enable the boardwalk to be used for years to come. As he welcomes Lt. Governor Murray, Representative Costello notes that Lt. Governor Murray is always welcome to Newburyport – especially with big checks. The $1.98M grant will cover a major portion of the estimated $2.5M project.
Representative Costello also noted that, “… never, in the history of time, have so many gathered for a central bulkhead!”
Lt. Governor Murray, from Worcester, has had much to learn in his position as head of the Seaport Advisory Council.
He noted that the bulkhead, built in 1977, supports 1,100 feet of boardwalk and is an important attraction in Newburyport to draw visitors. The design phase for the restoration will begin in 2013 with the work beginning in 2014.
