Opera Boston presents “The Telephone” at the Firehouse
“With this ring…” takes on a whole new meaning!

The Firehouse Center for the Arts is pleased to be able to announce the arrival of Opera Boston on the Firehouse stage. With a performance time of 50 minutes and a production that is geared to appeal to both children aged seven years or older and adults, The Telephone is a perfect opportunity to introduce your entire family to the joys of live opera. On Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 11AM the company will present Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Telephone,” a comic opera in one act, at the Arakelian Theater, Firehouse Center for the Arts, Market Square, Newburyport. Tickets are $11 for Adults and $9 for Students; and may be purchased at the Box Office (978/462-7336) or online at www.firehouse.org.

In today’s busy world cell phones are everywhere. Much of the time we are grateful for the instantaneous connection we can have with people anywhere, all the time. But every once in a while we just want to dial 911 and say “help – disconnect me please!” Ben desperately wants to talk with Lucy and ask her to marry him. But each time the critical moment arrives, she interrupts him to answer the phone. Using persistence and some creative problem solving, Ben finally succeeds in getting Lucy’s attention to ask this very important question!

An engaging theatrical program that features a complete performance of “The Telephone” plus a lively interactive introduction to the elements of opera and musical theater – several children from the audience will be asked to participate on stage in this entertaining and instructive hour. Opera Boston’s Education Program was launched in 2001 with a generous gift in memory of Pearl Guzik, and today it brings its company artists into diverse school and community settings with engaging, participatory programs that introduce children and adults to the excitement and beauty of live opera. Opera Boston’s Education Program continues to fill an important niche in providing arts education programming throughout the region.

Opera is an extraordinary fusion of all the arts — music, theatre, dance, and the visual arts — as interpreted through the intensity and beauty of the human voice. Come experience the power of live opera to inspire and enchant, and explore first-hand its ability to probe the depth of human emotion. Still think all opera is a Viking shattering glass when she hits the high notes during an excruciatingly long production? Think again and let your children teach you a thing or two about the arts with this endearing Opera Boston performance of The Telephone! You and your entire family will be glad you did.
