The Newburyport Ten Plein Air Painters Present Their Tenth Annual Show

"Monhegan Fog" by Daniel J. Shaw

“Fresh Air,” the tenth annual show by the Newburyport Ten plein air painters, will be held August 12-25, 2010, at the Newburyport Art Association, Newburyport, MA, in the Sargent and Hartson Galleries.
The group’s common bond is landscape painting. “En plein air” is a French expression for “in the open air,” working with the challenges of weather and changing light to create their art. You may have seen them around the North Shore and seacoast New Hampshire …. A group of artists wearing various styles of wide brim hats, setting up their outdoor easels in beautiful locations.

The “Newburyport Ten” (actually more than ten) is a group of artists that have been painting outside together for years, absorbing the sights, sounds, temperature and atmosphere around them, in order to learn more about how to see and paint the effects of light. While individual members follow their own artistic pursuits, the group meets weekly throughout the seasons to work in oil, watercolor, acrylic and pastel. This annual event is the major opportunity to see their “en plein air” work in one location.
