Fly away to Hawai’i with Dave Larson of Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats as he presents a slide program and lecture, “Birding in Hawai’i,” at Joppa Flats Education Center on Wednesday, August 18, at 7:30 p.m. This program is open to the public, appropriate for all ages, and free to Mass Audubon’s members; non-members are asked to pay an admission fee of $4. Joppa Flats Education Coordinator Dave Larson recently led a natural history trip to Hawai’i to explore three of the most beautiful islands in the United States. He returned with hundreds of photographs and almost as many stories. This presentation highlights the wildlife and scenery of Kaua’i, Maui, and Hawai’i (the Big Island), with a special emphasis on the endangered native birds of the islands.

A resident of Haverhill, Massachusetts, David Larson is the Director of Mass Audubon’s Birder’s Certificate Program, a college-level ornithology course. At the Joppa Flats Education Center, he designs and leads educational programs and field trips for participants of all ages. He holds a PhD in zoology from the University of Minnesota and has served on the faculty of Boston University. He has birded and led expeditions throughout North America and in the Caribbean, Trinidad, Belize, Panama, Brazil, Botswana, and Japan.

The Massachusetts Audubon Society is the largest conservation organization in New England, concentrating its efforts on protecting the nature of Massachusetts for people and wildlife.
