Parker River National Wildlife RefugeDuring the summer, the seacoast is a popular destination for migratory birds in the Atlantic flyway.   Birds, such as the Baltimore oriole or the peregrine falcon come to New England to nest before returning south to their wintering grounds.  Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge, located in Newington, New Hampshire, shelters a fascinating variety of avian life.

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is pleased to present for bid enthusiasts to observe some of these captivating animals at the Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge Open House.  With USFWS biologists, participants will explore Great Bay trails on 1,000 acres of undeveloped Refuge shoreline.  One may spot a range of birds at the Refuge; from large raptors, such as osprey and barred owls, to small songbirds, like the American goldfinch and yellow warbler.

This event will be held on July 31st, 2010 at 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM.  Please meet at Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters at the Parking Lot Kiosk.  Wear sturdy shoes, bring binoculars, and dress appropriately for the weather.

Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge is located on 100 Merrimac Drive in Newington, New Hampshire. Take exit 1 off Route 16 or Spaulding Turnpike and turn onto Pease Blvd. heading into Pease International Tradeport. Go through one stoplight to a stop sign and turn right on Arboretum Drive. Follow refuge signs for 3 miles to refuge parking lot, office and trails.

The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, administered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, was established in 1942 to provide habitat for and protect migratory birds and other wildlife species. Today the refuge protects fragile coastal habitat for over 350 bird species, as well as several plants, mammals, fish, insects, reptiles and amphibians.
