an exhibition of recent encaustic paintings
by award winning local artist Robin Luciano Beaty.

Robin works in the ancient medium of encaustic: a molten beeswax mixed with resin and dry pigments. She describes in her statement how the medium of encaustic provides her with an exploratory means of expression that everyday artists techniques can not; “My process is driven by the visceral experience of discovering something reminiscent rather than recording a specific space.

Salt Marsh Kayak Tour
Sat, May 29, 11am – 2pm


Learn about this amazing ecosystem and view some wildlife from a new perspective. Join refuge staff on an informative kayak/canoe paddle through the great marsh! This event is limited to 12 boats. Bring your own kayak or canoe and your own personal flotation device. This program fills up quickly so call early to register, and meet at Refuge Parking Lot 1 at 10:45am for an 11am launch.

All programs are FREE but space is LIMITED and advanced registration is required for all programs, unless otherwise indicated. Please call 978-465-5753 to register.
Please note that outdoor programs may be cancelled if there is inclement weather.

PARENT/CHILD WALKABOUT: IN SEARCH OF HORSESHOE CRABS
Explore the ecology, sights, and sounds on the banks of the Parker River. A fun, energetic format for families with children ages 3 to 6. Led by Teacher-Naturalist Lisa Hutchings. The fee covers one adult and one child. Choose one of two sessions.

Meet at Fernald’s Marine at the Parker River bridge on Rte. 1A, Newbury.

SATURDAY MORNING BIRDING: WHAT’S THAT BIRD?
A quick weekend jaunt to see the birds of greater Newburyport. No experience required. Limited to six participants. Children age 8 and up welcome.
Saturday, May 29, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Meet at the Joppa Flats Education Center, One Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, MA.
Fee: $7; FREE with the purchase of a new membership. Pre-registration is required.

HORSESHOE CRABS BY KAYAK ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
For families with children ages 7 and up. Go for a kayaking excursion in the calm waters around Plum Island to secluded areas where horseshoe crabs are visible during the springtime mating season. Co-sponsored by Plum Island Kayak. Choose one of two sessions.
Dates: Sunday, May 30, 11:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., or Monday, May 31, noon – 4:30 p.m.
Location: Meet at parking lot #1 on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.
Fee: $60. Price breaks for double kayaks and personal kayak use. Preregistration is required.

WEDNESDAY MORNING BIRDING
Join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. Appropriate for all birding levels.
