Ebb and Flow PosterThe Newburyport Art Association is delighted to announce “Ebb and Flow”, an exhibition of recent encaustic paintings by award winning local artist Robin Luciano Beaty.

Robin works in the ancient medium of encaustic: a molten beeswax mixed with resin and dry pigments. She describes in her statement how the medium of encaustic provides her with an exploratory means of expression that everyday artists techniques can not; “My process is driven by the visceral experience of discovering something reminiscent rather than recording a specific space. The act of scraping, tearing, building up and burning down the layers of wax from the surface is metaphor for digging into memory, and allows me to navigate that internal journey.” She adds “It is the intention of my work that the viewer see the personally familiar from a foreign perspective, concentrating on the often over-looked and unconventional.”

Beaty’s new body of work is mostly large in scale, mainly 3ft to 4ft square, commanding you to be physically encompassed in the atmospheric emotion translated so seductively by wax. Although this series instills an obvious sense of ethereal seascapes, they remain ambiguous yet curiously nostalgic, pushing the viewer to revisit images from their own recollections, sparked by the sensory experience of texture and touch. This show runs until June 6th.
