Spring Vacation…Outdoor Activities

We’ve had a taste of the warm summer weather so even though it’s bit chilly during this school vacation week, no one wants to head back inside! There is so much to do in our area that you don’t have to wait until summer to enjoy. Enjoy some outdoor activities that can still be fun in the spring.

Get out, walk, explore…enjoy the fabulous area in which we live.

Feel like a game of mini-golf? Kids of all ages will enjoy Captain’s Corner Mini Golf. The 18-hole course has a pirate/sea theme and on Saturday nights they have glow golf. There is also a new batting cage. Hodgies ice cream stand is across the street, and Lena’s Seafood is next door. It’s a whole day or evening within walking distance! If you keep your scorecard, one person pays half price on your next visit. Check it out at 73 Main St. in Salisbury or visit www.captainscornerminigolf.com.

Halibut Point

Feel like a hike along the ocean? Take a scenic drive to Rockport and enjoy Halibut Point Reservation. Looking seaward on a clear day, the view stretches from Crane Beach in Ipswich to Mount Agamenticus in Maine and the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire. Formerly the Babson Farm granite quarry, the park is managed for scenic, historic and conservation purposes by the DEM and the Trustees of Reservations. An adjacent property, Sea Rocks, is owned by the Town of Rockport and open for public use. Here you can explore the park’s trails and tide pools, picnic on its rocky ledges, enjoy its sweeping views, and learn about Cape Ann’s historic granite industry. 2.5 miles of trails and scenic overlooks of the old granite quarry and the ocean. Many sea birds will be spotted! It’s a moderate walking trail with great rock scrambling. Public rest rooms available. 16 Garfield Rd. (off Gott Ave.) Rockport. Call 978-526-8687 or visit www.thetrustees.org for more information.

Action Cove

Have you been to Action Cove yet? This public playground in West Newbury is a delightful, good-sized playground designed as a large wooden fort, with swings, slides, a stationary boat and sandbox area. There are nice grass areas for picnics as well as several picnic tables and a gazebo. Kids love it! Bring lunch and spend the day. 15 Bachelor Street, off Rte 113, West Newbury.

Another favorite park is Moseley Woods (also known at Moseley Pines). This 16-acre public park features hiking trails, picnic tables, fireplaces for grilling, a well-equipped playground and a spacious pavilion that is home to a summer concert series and can also be rented out. The playground includes huge slides, dinosaurs to climb on, a zip fly setup and rock climbing. A haven for nature lovers, dog walkers and children, the park is maintained by the Friends of Moseley Woods, a registered non-profit corporation established by members of the Moseley Woods Commission and the City of Newburyport. Free parking. Accessible restroom in season and with prior notification gas grills are allowed on the premises.

Odione ParkFinally take a drive along the beach to Rye and enjoy the scenery and then stop at the Odione Park Seacoast Science Center. This is a popular destination for families and students to learn about coastal environmental history. The Center creates connections to nature through personal learning experiences in the natural sciences. The Center offers a wide range of exhibits and programs that appeal to all ages, backgrounds and learning styles. From the pre-K Treks-4-Tots program to the winter Heritage Dinner Series, from nature walks to expedition travel, there is something for everyone! There is also a large playground and picnic facilities within walking distance. Members = Free, Under age 3 = Free, ages 3-12 = $2, ages 13+ = $5 . Open in April for the season. 570 Ocean Boulevard, Rye, NH. Call 603-436-8043 or visit www.seacoastsciencecenter.org/index.php/ for more information.
