Newburyport Today is welcomes back local photographer Mariah Gale for her bi-weekly post. Please look for Mariah strolling around Newburyport snapping photos and asking “what’s the word on the street?”

Javin, 4, and Mason, 3, stand in front of the tree in Market Square. "We're from Byfield, and we came down to walk around and see the tree decorated!" their mom says as they pose for us.

John and Mollie, from Gloucester, pause to pose for us on State Street. "We're Christmas shopping, and just came from Praline's Bakery on Liberty Street," they said, "we won a dinner from the owner of Praline's back in September, and the food was absolutely phenomenal...we keep going back!"

Jesse Walker, from Newburyport, plays in one of the brick archways on State Street for passerby. We played 'name that song' for a bit, while he told us about his teaching music lessons in the area. "I teach guitar, piano, and drums, and I'm accepting new students," he said.

Megan, a grad student at Northeastern University, lounges in Starbucks with a reading assignment. "I'm in the MFA program for Literature," she said, "I'm getting some work done while I'm home for Thanksgiving!" Homework is always better done with an eggnog latté and sugar cookie.
