Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center is proud to announce the grand opening of The Lookout, their new family-friendly green space designed and built for nature exploration. Nature lovers of all ages are invited to come to a free Open House at Joppa Flats on Sunday, December 6, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. to experience the fun of this new education room. Visitors will enjoy the new-room ambience while playing an interactive bird game or going on a scavenger hunt, interacting with live tide pool creatures in the new teaching tank, or creating take-home inventions made from recyclables.
Mass Audubon built The Lookout in response to an increasing demand for natural history programs for children, families, and schools at Joppa Flats. Construction of The Lookout was made possible through the generous support of Joppa Flats volunteers and program participants and through a $145,000 grant from the Mass Cultural Council. In making this grant, the council cited the important role that the Joppa Flats Education Center plays in promoting environmental education and contributing to the economic well-being of the greater Newburyport area.
Mass Audubon is the largest conservation organization in New England, caring for 34,000 acres of conservation land and providing education programs for 200,000 children and adults annually. Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, located at One Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport, is a natural history education center that is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday and Monday holidays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Call 978-462-9998 for information about additional programs and events, or visit the website at www.massaudubon.org.
