Newburyport Today is welcomes back local photographer Mariah Gale for her bi-weekly post. Please look for Mariah strolling around Newburyport snapping photos and asking “what’s the word on the street?”

Jill Bourdelais, May Harriman, and Eleanor Davison pause outside of Not Your Average Joe's to pose for us. "We're shopping downtown, and just about to find the perfect chowder for lunch!" Eleanor said. After suggesting numerous chowder-selling venues in Newburyport, they settled on Michael's Harborside, and were heading down that way.

We found Barbara Haack and Joanna Hammond working hard on weeding the Peace Garden, located right along the boardwalk on the waterfront. "We planted this garden in 2003, when the war started," Barbara said. They're a part of W.A.N.D, "Women's Action For New Directions", a group that empowers and educates women on politics and getting involved in the community politically. "Not enough," they said, when asked how many volunteers the group has. If you're interested in getting involved in WAND and helping out, you can call Joanne directly at (978)-388-3230.

Benjamin, relaxing at the tot lot and eating lunch, graciously reaches to share some with the photographer. “We’re eating lunch down here, because his brother just got out of Montessori school,” his mom said.
