Newburyport Today is welcomes back local photographer Mariah Gale for her weekly post. Please look for Mariah strolling around Newburyport snapping photos and asking “what’s the word on the street?”

Shana Cortez, with her dappled dachshund Pluto (named for the demoted planet), sit on the green in the sun. "He's watching a family play football," Shana said, and indeed, it was hard for him to look at the camera with a distracting ball flying through the air in front of him. "We've been going for a walk around town, and everyone stops us to ask what color he is!"

Katherine, 5, and her mom, Gen, take a bikeride from downtown up State Street. "We're from just up the street!" Gen said, and it was much easier to navigate downtown on bikes than in cars on Labor Day, to be sure!

Leo and Domenic, both 6 1/2 months old and from Amesbury, take in the Labor Day scene downtown. "We've been enjoying them all day," their grandmother said, and "we're just about to bring them back down to the waterfront for their bottles!"

Becky (left), and Krissy (right), pose with the David's restaurant sign in the square with a friend. "We work for David's, and came down just to say hi and see how their day went," they said. The restaurant tents in the square worked hard all day feeding hungry shoppers and tourists!

Bill Gynan, of Newburyport, goes for a sail in the Merrimac, outside of Newburyport Harbor. "It's relaxing," he says. Can't beat a sailboat ride for relaxation on a warm September afternoon!
