There are those that talk and those that do. Andrea Egmont, Director of Newburyport’s Youth Services is most definitely the latter. When Newburyport Today went to meet with her at the Youth Services hosted “Girls Night Out” she was all over the room – chatting with the kids, coordinating the activities, and as shown above participating! It was great to see the enthusiasm she has and the kids clearly think she’s wonderful.
Youth Service’s mission is to create quality programming and events for the city’s youth in safe and supportive environments that encourage growth, self exploration and empowerment. The department also acts as an advocate for the youth, so that their ideas, concerns and needs are heard and addressed by the community of Newburyport. Toward that end, Adrea over sees a wide array of programming. When we asked Andrea what she wanted to share about Newburyport Youth Services she wanted to talk about their plans for the Kelley School Youth Center. “NYS is so exited to be moving forward on opening the center. The department hopes to have the building operational by June for our Summer Programming.” Youth Services is holding it’s first ever fundraiser to raise funds for the building and the operation of a middle school drop in center to re-open next Fall. The department will be hosting a Family Prom that will feature dinner and dancing, family portraits and the first everBeacon Awards (to celebrate those individuals building youth assets in our community). She went on to say that what it says to those youth is “You are Valued”. Clearly that is a message that needs to be heard.
